Freed hostage is eager for reunion with son taken from her by rebels.

This article takes place in Caracas, Venezuela where Clara Rojas was recently freed after 4 years of being held in captivity by the Colombian Rebels. Before she was kidnapped, she gave birth to her son by kitchen knife C-Section. She has not seen her son since he was 8 months old. Clara cannot wait for the day she can reunite with her son. An investigation has been made to find her son in which they've found that he had been in foster care in Bogota under a different name. When her son was born, his arm was broken because of the way he was pulled out by the nurse. Clara let the Colombian Rebels take her son to get checked on so they can fix his arm, but never returned with the child. Later, Clara was taken along with Betancourt, who was campaigning for Presidency. They both tried escaping but got lost and were later found and cuffed by the ankles to trees as punishment. Clara has not seen Betancourt since they were seperated 3 years ago.

I am shocked by this article because i did not know that any of this existed. I did not know that people have been held in captivity by rebels for years and still live in that situation. I hope clara is able to reunite with her son and get custody over him. Her son is still young so im pretty sure it'll be okay to see him, but im pretty sure her son will be confused and like his foster parents better, only because he thinks of the foster parents as his parents.

- The San Diego Union Tribune
- Bid to lift beach booze ban stalls
- The article that I read today was about the booze ban on San Diego beaches. It states that opponents petitions lack valid signatures. Opponents of an alcohol ban on San Diego beaches might have failed in their attempt to quash the new law before it started. Of the 45,557 signatures turned in by opponents, not enough were determined valid in an initial count, stated a memo that City Clerk Elizabeth Maland sent to city council offices yesterday. The booze ban which would affect San Diego beaches and coastal parks for a one year trial, was scheduled to take effect on Jan. 5. it was suspended the same day after opponents turned in boxes of petitions to fight. A random sampling of 1,367 signatures, 3 percent of those submitted revealed that 680 qualified, the clerks memo said. At that rate 21,564 signatures would have been valid, not the 30,209 required to force the council to rescind the law or put it to public vote, the memo said.
- I think that this is an interesting article. This law has some good effects and some bad effect on San Diego. A good effect is that the beaches will be a little safer for everybody. But one thing is for sure many people will be upset by this law.
- One interesting that I learned is that the ban will take effect immediately as the notice of insufficient signatures was issued yesterday.

“Iraq Eases Limits On Baathists In Office”
►What I read in the newspapers was that the Iraqi parliament passed a bill yesterday that allow some former officials from Saddam Hussein's Baath Party to apply for government positions, in the first of the so-called political benchmark measures to pass after months of U.S. pressure for progress. Supporters said the measure, which is expected to be approved by the presidential council, would open the door for the reinstatement of thousands of low-level Baath Party members barred form office after the 2003 U.S. invasion. The Bush administration had urged the Iraqi government to pass such a measure to help mend the deep rifts between Sunni Arabs who used to control the government under Hussein and the Shiites who now dominate politics here.
►I agree because if they pass the bill they could have more control over Iraq.
►I also agree because they need to put another kind of government.
►In the other hand I don’t agree because that's not their country.
►I think the most interpreting fact its that they did pass the bill on Iraq.

Today in the union tribune I read that in Onibury England, its like this, picture your humdrum city life is turned upside down when you inherit, wholly unexpectedly, a vast Victorian country estate. You manage to get together enough cash to fix the leaky roof and settle precariously into your new home, leaving behind your job, your friends, and your plans for the future. For more than a decade, you scramble to keep up with the expense of maintaining the huge establishment. And then lighting strikes again, a film company, asking to use your house as the set for its adaptation of a best selling novel. The production pays a six figure rent and helps renovate the long neglected interior, and you also get a surprise dividend, a little of the stars glamour rubs off on you and your suddenly a famous country seat. That is the Hollywood story line of Caroline Magnus life in the last 15 years, since the night she came home from her dinner party in London and learned that she and her brother inherited a bulk of their aunts property, including the gargantuan stokesay court. The house built in 1891 in the so-called jacobethan style, is the rich backdrop for the first half of atonement, the golden globe nominated movie based on Ian McEwen novel, starring keira nightley and James Mcavoy. The winners are expected to be announced today. Magnus, who now gives guided tours to visitors who want to step into the film, surrounded themselves with acres of gleaming oak paneling and gaze upon the fountain where keira nightley takes an impetus plunge is understandingly delighted. It has put the house on the map, she said and allowed her to charge 25 dollars a head to groups of 20 or more. (she estimated that she has given some two dozen tours since September, when atonement opened in England.)

Suicide
Bombers

A suicide bomber attacked a five star hotel that is frequented by foreigners in Afghanistan. The extremists went in as a group of four and started shooting towards the people inside the lobby of the hotel. The attack left 6 people wounded and at least two of them were foreigners. The newspaper report doesn’t say exactly how many were killed but it does mention of at least two deaths. The death of one American Citizen and the death of a journalist from Oslo. The four militants of the Afghanistan terrorist group went into the hotel lobby and set off the bomb. The explosion was so powerful that it was heard from two miles away. Then after the explosion the three militants that survived the attack opened gunfire on the civilians. After the attack the Taliban claimed responsibility of the attack and they said it was directed towards foreigners, especially Norwegians. The Taliban is furious over the fact that Norway helped in the invasion of Afghanistan. Other officials believe that the attacks were due to the fact that a Norwegian foreign minister was staying at the hotel. It is really disappointing and depressing to see that no matter what, people still engage in the act of killing one another. There is no peace and no unity amongst nations that are very powerful. Instead they are always fighting to prove to each other who is better or just for revenge but in their attacks to each other they take the lives of the innocent.

Source;; Union Tribune.

Article;; "Amputee agrees to stop driving in face of prison time"

Summary;; This morning I read an article base don a time when nothing could keep Michael Francis Wiley from behind the wheel, not even a triple amputation that makes simple tasks suck as tying a shoe impossible. Police who arrested Wiley so many times that it made it a felony for him to drive but that still did not stop him. But he is now at the end of the road and Wiley is scheduled to face a judge tomorrow for sentence ing on a new round of felony charges. Wiley is being charged for traffic and drug possession. Prosecuters want to put him in prison for atleast five years and this time Wiley says he's going to turn in his keys for good. Wiley lost his arms and most of his left leg in a 1980 accident when he was only thirteen years old. He learned to live without limbs. He taught himself to drive without arms. He starts the car with his toes, shifts with his knee, and steers with the stumb of his arm. He turns on the light with his teeth. Driving, he said, is one of the few things that lets him feel free and exert his independence. He says that he's an excellent driver and that it's one of the things he's good at all by himself.

Reflection;; This article was interesting from start to finish, it's amazing how someone who does not have any limbs manages to drive and cause trouble driving at the same time.

♫ The article I read about this morning was about the website MySpace. The owner of MySpace is promising to make the website safer. The owner is getting pressure from law enforcements and parents to make the website safer from predators and bullies for their children. This website is very popular all over the world. The owner has promised to create a task force of industry professionals to improve the safety of users. An attorney general from North Carolina by the name of Roy Cooper thinks that parents and law enforcements should continue to tell children that they’re not just typing into a computer they’re also sharing information with the world. A lot of the teenagers that have a MySpace make up a large part of their membership information. Their was only one state that does not want to join with the agreement.
♫ I think that what their planning on doing with the websites is a very good idea. A lot of things have been happening to young teenagers and a lot of younger Kids. I hope that they do make this agreement and make the websites better so teenagers and younger kids can be safe to explore the internet.
♫ An interesting fact that I read in this article was that the only state that doesn’t want to join the agreement was Texas.

The article I read today was about studies that show the legal status of abortions and how it does not affect it’s performance rates. The studies have shown that abortions have derived an increase rate from 1995 to 2003. another significant thing discovered by these studies is that most of the abortions take place among the poor in countries that are unsafe for the process. About 7,000 women die every year from unsafe abortions. 5 million have suffer dangerous injuries due to the inexperience procedures made by clinics in poor places. The vast majority of abortions have moved up to 35 million. Funds from the U.S government can not be used in any health services to help make abortion processes safer. Unsafe abortions usually come from the category of people who lack skills or medical standards and just say they know how to make money. I think it really sucks what these people can do. They take advantage of people who don’t know much so that they could use there money saying that they have skills when they really don’t. and as for the girls who get these abortions they trust these clinics and unprofessional doctors because they don’t know the risks.

Union Tribune: Police dogs’ duty more dangerous.
Today I have read an article on a San Diego police dog. Stryker the dog recently died in the line of duty and he wasn’t the first dog. Many police dogs have been shot, stabbed and clubbed. In San Diego County few police dogs have died but attacks on them have been rising. Stryker was sent after a drunk driver on San Diego Coronado Bridge on New Year’s Eve. Stryker bit the man and dragged him down. The man then picked up the 6 ½ year old and jumped. It was 200 feet down, the man survived but Stryker did not. This story is so sad. These dogs are very courageous and they are strong. How can someone be so cruel to them. I think that it is nice that they are having a memorial on this dog.
